August 2016
Welcome to the BGCVA Health & Wellness Blog. In this first edition, we will feature one of our Health & Wellness Ministry Heroes.  Let me introduce you to Sharon.

Here is my  story in her own words.
My Name is Sharon. I am 47 years old.  I have been on a lifestyle journey for several years.  I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes back in 2001.  I was at 362 pounds when I started to make a change. I started making small changes because saying “I want to loose 50 pounds” was overwhelming to me.  So I started reading labels and sticking to serving sizes and making healthy choices.  I tried many different programs to keep me focused and consistent. Believing that you can and a lot of praying goes a long way. I have currently lost a total of 89 pounds. I am 11 pounds away from my 100. I walked the Ukrops 10k April 9, 2016.  My first K of any kind.
Last August 11, 2015, I started a health and wellness ministry at my church, “Let’s Move Together”. Our Pastor Arthur Anderson suggested that I reach out to Dr. Burke, the BGC Director of the Health and Wellness for guidance. He has been very helpful with resources, that has made it possible for our program to work.
On June 12, 2016, Dr. Burke came to our church (Mt. Nebo Baptist, West Point, VA) to preach our Educational & Health service. We also provided at healthy light lunch for everyone.  Generally  when you are having weight issues and the doctor says, “just move a little”, well that is what we started doing.  We will have been working out a year in a few days.  We do Tuesday with the regular group and Thursday with beginners and the regular group.

We started with one day a week and now more.  We even will get in a Saturday morning walk.  We bring can food donations for the Good Neighbor Center in West Point.  I try to encourage all levels of fitness to come.   We started with just line dancing and then Biggest Loser  and Leslie Sansone DVDs.  Last week the group conquered 4 miles in 52 minutes.  They are so awesome. Rev. Arthur Anderson, my wonderful family, church family and community have been great supporters of the group.
Congratulations Sharon, you inspire all of us. Special thanks to Rev. Arthur Anderson and the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church family for being willing to step out on faith and begin to improve the health of your congregation. Thank God for your willingness to share your story. Now many of us will be praying for your continued success.
